Cal-ICMA Invites Members to Participate in Groundbreaking AI in Local Government Research Initiative
May 2025 – Cal-ICMA is pleased to announce an opportunity for its members to participate in a cross-institutional research initiative exploring the adoption, implementation, and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in local government operations.
This initiative, the Survey of AI in Local Government (SAIL-GOV), is led by a consortium of six universities—Northern Illinois University, Purdue University, University of Nebraska Omaha, University of Massachusetts Boston, California State University LA, and Kean University. The study seeks to map AI adoption trends, identify best practices and challenges, and examine ethical and governance considerations in municipal AI use.
Why This Matters
AI is transforming local government operations, from streamlining services to enhancing decision-making. However, understanding how AI is being used, the barriers to adoption, and the ethical considerations surrounding its deployment remains a critical challenge. This research will provide data-driven insights to support informed policymaking and best practices for AI implementation.
How Cal-ICMA Members Can Participate
The survey is set to be distributed in Summer 2025, with local government professionals invited to share their experiences and perspectives. Participants will gain early access to key findings, comparative insights, and opportunities for joint research publications.
Cal-ICMA encourages city managers, municipal leaders, and government employees to engage in this first-of-its-kind international study to help shape the future of AI in governance.
