Reflections from Scholarship Recipient Nataly Luna | A Day with ICMA Phoenix, AZ
Author: Nataly Luna – Graduate Student, Pepperdine University
Being awarded the Cal-ICMA scholarships to the 2026 Day with ICMA Conference in Phoenix, AZ was transformative because it offered me a perspective into local government. As a new chapter and member at ICMA, I enjoy meeting new people and learning about various careers and professions. Attending this conference with the emphasis on disruptive communities reflects the necessity and struggles that cities are facing. In the workshop, “Disruptive Trends & Evolving Community Experience”, I learned about the profession of working in local government and the support one has by the communities. I had the privilege of connecting with Mike James prior to the day of the conference so it was refreshing to know someone at the conference. Mike provided me insight towards his career journey which offered me further perspective on the role and dynamic of working in the city. I also attended the conference with Karissa, who is Vice-President at Pepperdine University. Coming to the conference together was another bonding opportunity for both of us as we were generating ideas of what we can bring back to support our growing chapter.
During the workshop and through small discussion, I was able to hear from the experiences of fellow ICMA members and how different/evolving the organization has been through the years. It was fascinating to hear about how long people’s membership has been. I learned about the concerns, challenges, and positives of working in the city. I was able to network with lots of members as everyone was really friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the small dynamic of having intimate groups as I was able to observe and hear from the perspective of other city staffers/city managers. Moreover, there was great discussion in understanding the code of ethics and vision for what local government should be. Through small group discussion, we discussed the enduring qualities that anchor people’s profession in local government. I was able to understand the varying dynamic between city council and city staffers. Overall, I had a great experience attending “A Day with ICMA” conference
